“Meaningful things in life are abstract, it is free and it lasts. Meaningless things are concrete, they are mostly expensive and it does not last.”
Our everyday lives are dominated by the reality of six things which constitute the meaningfulness and meaninglessness of things in life: these are the abstract or concrete things; the lasting or impermanent things; and finally the free or costly things. The art of living – so it has been said – may be found in the capacity to choose correctly between these six things. In “The Evolving Self”, Csikszentmihalyi ask human beings to create a sense of harmony between their goals and their desires. It is known as the so-called Psychology of Aspiration, that is, to know where you are going to in life and to know what you want from life.
Humanity, in their pursuance of the so-called good life, has the tendency to mainly focus on the meaningless things in life. The tendency is also to accumulate concrete things. I think that we will be happier citizens on this planet if we can start to pursue the meaningful things in life and if that chase can be our first priority. I also believe that if we do this, we would then surely contribute to establishing a community and a world where that which is of importance will be given precedence over that which is of unimportance.
Remember, the valuable things in life is free, it is lasting, it is not things that will rust or let you down or cost you a lot of money.
Meaningless things will cost you a buck or two,
unfortunately it can rust and deteriorate;
meaningful things however are free to me and you
and it last, that’s the point I want to accentuate.
