The Russian writer and thinker, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, said that to live without hope, is to cease to live. I always remind people of a Portuguese saying: Hope is the last one to die. Are you familiar with the Greek mythological tale of Pandora’s Box, and what happened when she opened it? If so, then you will know that it was only hope who failed to escape Pandora’s Box after all the evils in the world managed to escape. For humanity, there was thus only one thing left in that chest, and that is hope, the last resort to comfort us in times of misfortune. Yes, hope is indeed the last thing to die. So, why is hope so important? Well, it is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe tomorrow will be better, we can bear the hardships we experience today. Unfortunately, hope can also be a bad thing (maybe that is why it was amongst all the evils in Pandora’s Box). Why do I say hope can be an evil? Think about it, what if you cling to unrealistic hope? Do you think unrealistic hope is something good? Hoping in something that will never materialize will at the end of the day demoralize you more. Hope is fine, just make sure you live in this world and cling to realistic hope, instead of living in a dream world where you cling to hope that befriends absurdity. Realistic hope can shape our futures, as long as we remember to learn from yesterday, live for today, and always hope for tomorrow. There will be finite disappointments in your life, but the good news is that there is always infinite hope. Yes, hope is surely infinite, and I believe that you may recall those moments where all seemed lost, but where hope carried you through it all. Remember, hope breeds hope, just as hopelessness breeds hopelessness. Whenever you think that you find yourself on the plain of despair, remember that you can always cling to hope, for hope is surely the last one to die.

Die Russiese skrywer en denker, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, meen dat om sonder hoop te leef, dieselfde is as soos om op te hou om te bestaan. Daar is hierdie mooi uitdrukking in Portugees: Hoop is die laaste een om dood te gaan, en ek herinner baie gereeld hieraan. Is jy enigsinds vertroud met die Grieks-mitologiese verhaal van Pandora se Boks, en wat gebeur het toe sy dit oopmaak? Indien wel sal jy weet dat hoop die enigste een was wie daarin misluk het om uit Pandora se Boks te ontsnap, dit na al die ander euwels in die wêreld daarin geslaag het om te ontsnap. Vir die mensdom het daar dus net een ding oorgebly in haar boks, en dit is hoop, daardie laaste toevlug wat ons vertroosting bied in tye van teëspoed. Ja, hoop is inderdaad die laaste een om te sterf. So, waarom is hoop nou weer so belangrik? Wel, dit is belangrik want dit kan die hier en die nou soveel meer verdraagsaam maak. As ons glo dat môre beter gaan wees, kan ons enige ontbering verdra wat ons vandag moet dra. En hier kom die duiwelsadvokaat… Jip, ongelukkig kan hoop ook ‘n vernietigende krag wees (miskien is dit waarom hoop saam met al die ander euwels van die wêreld in Pandora se Boks was). Waarom sê ek dat hoop ‘n euwel kan wees? Gaan dink ‘n bietjie hieroor. Wat as jy klou aan onrealistiese hoop? Dink jy enigsinds dat onrealistiese hoop iets goeds is? As jy in iets hoop wat nie aan die einde van die dag gaan verwesenlik nie, dan gaan dit jou demoraliseer. Dit is puik om aan hoop te klou, maak net seker dat jy in hierdie wêreld leef en dat jou hoop realisties is, want as jy in ‘n droomwêreld leef en klou aan onrealistiese hoop wat grens aan absurditeit, dan sien ek ‘n donker toekoms vir jou. Realistiese hoop kan ons toekoms vorm, so lank as wat ons net sal onthou om te leer uit gister, te leef vir vandag, en te hoop vir môre. Ja, daar sal beperkte teleurstellings wees, maar die goeie nuus is dat daar altyd onbeperkte hoop is. Hoop is verseker oneindig, en ek is vas daarvan oortuig dat jy momente in jou lewe kan herroep waar dit gelyk het of alles verlore was. Wat het jou deur hierdie tye gedra? Seer sekerlik HOOP. Onthou, hoop broei hoop, net soos wat hopeloosheid op sy beurt hopeloosheid voortbring. As jy jouself ooit op die vlakte van wanhoop vind, weet dat daar iewers hoop is om aan vas te klou, want soos ek altyd sê, hoop is die laaste een om te sterf.

Daar is altyd hoop
en altyd diegene wie wegkwyn in ‘n staat van hopeloosheid.

Kyk, ons weet die lewe is een strawwe stryd,

maar moet nie toelaat dat wanhoop oor jou lewe loop en jou huisie sloop.
