“Those who do not
feel pain seldom think that it is felt.”
Samuel Johnson
Pain is a certainty of life, whether that
pain is physical or mental. Even though some people can endure the one more
than the other, and in varying degrees of intensity, pain will nonetheless
always be a part of your life. Thomas Jefferson was of the opinion that the art
of life is the art of avoiding pain, and that he/she is the best pilot who
steers clearest of the rocks and shoals with which it is beset. True, people
mostly steer away from experiencing pain, but you cannot run away from the
inevitabilities of life, of which pain is one!
If evil is the root of mystery, then pain
is the root of knowledge, said Simone Weil. Pain may, therefore, fulfil the
role of enriching your life, by teaching you patience. Strength is usually not
because pain doesn’t affect us, we are strong because we endure that pain. Even
the Marquis de Sade thought that there is nowhere a more lively sensation than
that of pain due to the fact that its impressions are certain and dependable,
they never deceive you. In life, however, the same pain that teaches us and
that enrich our lives may break another person. It is as the saying goes, the
same love that crowns you can also crucify you. Let us draw this to that of
pain. If we can make it a point to keep this in mind, knowing that every other
person struggles with his/her own kind of pain, then we may just foster more
compassion with others.
At times my
physical and mental pain
wants to drive me insane…
wants to drive me insane…
But in managing it
I grow from strength to strength,
on life’s journey, irrespective of its length.
on life’s journey, irrespective of its length.
