“It is not the oath that makes us believe
the man, but the man the oath.”
Aeschylus
Talk is cheap to
so many people, and it seems as if they care very little for being true to
their word. Jean Jacques Rousseau said that those that are most slow in making
a promise are the most faithful in the performance of it. Maybe it is true that
there are graves between today and tomorrow, and craters between promising and
fulfilling?
Even Carl Jung, the renowned Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, was
of the opinion that the individual who promises everything is sure to fulfil
nothing and everyone who promises too much is in danger of using evil means in
order to carry out their promises. Let’s have a glimpse at some proverbs in
this regard:
Easily promised,
quickly forgotten – Japanese proverb;
A promise is a
cloud; fulfilment is rain – Arabian proverb;
There is no
greater fraud than a promise not kept – Gaelic proverb.
Being honest have many advantages; it not only promotes authenticity,
but it also shows that you have some courage and that you care. Furthermore, it
shows that you respect not only yourself but others too. This shows that you
are mature and self-accepting. When you lie, you carry a lot of garbage with
you, but this is not the case when you are honest, because being honest is to
be free. Napoleon Bonaparte says: “The
best way to keep one's word is not to give it.” I think the best thing to
do is whenever you have to or want to give your word, be sure it is true.
Work and pray,
live on hay,
you’ll get pie in the sky when you die.
you’ll get pie in the sky when you die.
